New Sports Hall and Dance Studio
Friday 18 July 2008
Work has begun on the £1.175 million project at Gladesmore Community School to upgrade sports facilities and provide a new dance space.
The scheme will see:
- an extension to the existing sports hall
- the creation of a new dance and exercise studio
- improvements to the existing fitness suite
- upgrades to the facilities for disabled access
The initiative is funded and supported through the Big Lottery Fund (BLF) and Haringey's Building Schools for the Future programme.
In 2003 the school was awarded £491,000 of Big Lottery Funding in order to refurbish the existing facilities, provide disabled access and a new dance studio. This scheme has been designed in parallel with the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme which will also see enhancements to other parts of the school, and its information and communications technology (ICT). This series of significant improvements to the school's buildings will help to support teaching and learning.
Cllr Santry, Haringey Council's cabinet member for children and young people, said:
This is a really exciting project and it marks the start of major construction programmes in all our secondary schools over the next three years which will deliver huge improvements.
Tony Hartney CBE, Headteacher of the school in Crowland Road, South Tottenham, said:
The students at Gladesmore are fabulous at sport and dance. The performances that they put on are awesome. So I am absolutely delighted that we were able to get funding from the Big Lottery and BSF to build a dance studio and gymnasium. The children really deserve it. These excellent new facilities will enable them to develop their top class talents to the full and put on amazing performances.
The work is taking place to the existing sports centre facilities and the existing entrance area will be re-configured. An extension to the sports hall will principally provide a gymnasium space and a dance studio for both school and wider community use.
The extension and the existing building will be connected by a linking common entrance/atrium space. It is anticipated that the building will be occupied by the beginning of January 2009.
