UK Youth Parliament

Youth Parliament ConferenceUK Youth Parliament (UKYP) aims to provide an opportunity for young people aged 11 to 19 to be involved in democratic politics at a national level. It aims to be a representative body.

How does it work?

Elections are held annually in January for the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP). Haringey has three Members of UKYP (MYPs). Young people who want take part in the elections need to attend a workshop before the elections. This covers issues of:

  • Citizenship
    • what is a citizen?
    • good and bad citizens.
  • Democracy
    • why is it important?
    • do we need it?
    • what is wrong with a dictatorship?
  • Representation
    • what does it mean to be a representative?
    • good and bad representatives
    • the issue of corruption.

MYPs attend regional meetings once a month and will attend one residential meeting working on the regional manifestos. They will also attend the annual sitting which is made up of all the MYPs across the country. The UKYP is composed of representatives aged between 11 and 18 years old (inclusive) from across the UK. The UKYP particularly encourages the involvement of young people who are socially excluded, but also representation from established groups such as local youth councils and individuals.

It meets on a regional and national basis and also stages special events. It is necessary to pay an membership fee to be part of the UKYP.

Although we have had members in the past they have not been elected through a wide franchise.

This year our youth service has organised for democratic elections to take place across the borough involving schools and youth centres.

Flyers were sent out in December inviting any young person between the age of 11 and 19 to consider standing and to attend a day training event in January. Ten candidates came forward. Click here to read all candidate manifestos for 2008.

Some interesting facts about what happened in this year's elections:

  • 80% of participants attend Alexandra, Park View Academy, Fortismere, or Highgate Wood School
  • More than 2,700 young people registered - over 2,000 went on to vote (77%)
  • Highgate Wood School had a 95% turn out
