Following the success of the Youth Opportunity and Youth Capital Fund over the last two years, the government has decided to extend the programme for a further three years.
Haringey has also had its grant allocation increased by almost £100,000 this year.
Haringey Youth Opportunity and Youth Capital Funds for 2008 - 9 are now being advertised. These funds are managed by a Youth Panel. Applications for funds must be from young people aged 13-19, resident in Haringey.
Money for your Ideas
We want your voice to be heard!
We have been allocated over £400,000 for the year, and you decide:
- what to do with it through your ideas
- who gets what
The money is there to help 13 -19 year olds in Haringey just like you, to:
- take a lead role in improving youth facilities
- enjoy your life and spare time
- learn new skills that look great on a CV or college application form.
It doesn't matter who you are, everyone can have their say and get involved.
All you need to do is show how your project can improve your area, by filling out an application form (see below).
|back to topWho decides who gets the money?
Young people like yourself get to decide where the money goes. We have developed a Youth Grant Management Panel composed of a group of young people from the Youth Council to make the decisions about grant awards and to manage the process. You can apply to be on this panel if your school or youth group is part of Haringey Youth Council. The Panel have had training in the skills needed to communicate effectively, listen, question and observe, undertake project appraisal, monitor and evaluate projects.
We currently have 20 young people on the panel all between the ages of 13 – 19; they meet every Thursday at River park house between 5 – 7pm.
They were elected to become panel members after application forms were distributed to youth organisations and the Youth Council in July 2006. The elected panel members were taken to France on a four day training residential which enabled them to look at and discuss the criteria and apply a young people-led system for funding.
|back to topWhat's in it for you?
Don't worry if you've never done anything like this before.
What's good about Youth Funds is that you can get together with your mates and work out what's missing in your area.
So get the ball rolling, have a say in what activities and facilities are needed, get involved and see your plan come to life.
|back to topWhat does YOF and YCF mean?
YOF stands for the Youth Opportunity Fund - YOF money is usually awarded to the projects themselves and the money can be used to buy equipment.
YCF stands for the Youth Capital Fund. YCF projects tend to be larger in size than YOF ones, and help to pay for the buildings and facilities that each project needs.
Don’t worry about the terms; the most important thing is to come up with a top idea and fill out an application form (see below).

The YOF application date is now closed. Watch this space for updates!
It is important that:
- projects are largely completed within the financial year of each grant
- the funds are designed to improve the things to do and places to go for young people.
- young people drive the project ideas which could be for anything from creating a basketball facility to learning basket weaving.
- young people undertake the monitoring, reporting and evaluation of their project.
The grant giving Youth Funds Panel will also be involved in monitoring visits. The Youth Panel are more likely to look favourable on groups who have not received YOF funding previously.
In order to request an application form with guidance notes you can email youthopportunities@haringey.gov.uk or call 020 8489 5012; 020 8489 2228 or 07973 244 102.
If any grant Funds remain after all applications have been assessed in October it is likely that there will be a further funding round which will be advertised in good time.
