Youth Offending Service

What is the Youth Offending Service?

The Youth Offending Service (YOS) is here to help:

  • children and young people aged 10 to 17 who have committed offences, as well as
  • victims of crime

The YOS is made up of:

  • social workers
  • police officers
  • health workers
  • teachers
  • parents
  • people from Connexions
  • group and substance misuse workers
  • referral panel volunteers

The Prevention Team works with young people to help prevent crimes and re-offending. Schemes they run include:

  • On Track
  • Youth Inclusion
  • Support Panel
  • Junior Youth Inclusion Programme

What will happen if you are arrested?

If you are arrested by the police for a minor offence or for the first time, you will either be given a warning
or a final warning (caution). When this happens the police will inform the YOS and we will contact you and your parents/carers to see if we can help to keep you out of trouble.

Appropriate Adult Scheme

If you have been arrested and taken to a police station, you will need to have an appropriate adult with you if you are under 17 years of age. This should normally be your parent/carer or adult family member. If nobody like this is able to attend, we will provide an appropriate adult if you are in a Haringey police station.

Going to court

If you have already had a final warning from the police station or you have committed a serious offence, the police will charge you. This means that you will have to go to court. We always make sure that a member of staff is there to give information to the court and to meet with you.

If the court finds you guilty or you plead guilty to the offence you have been charged with, the court may sentence you there and then. Otherwise the court will ask us to prepare a report. This usually takes three weeks.

Sentences

The court can give you one of many sentences. Most of the sentences mean that you will have some contact with us. We will provide you with information about the sentence you receive, what it means and what you need to do.

Where you live during the court case

Sometimes the court will decide that a young person should not return home while their court case is happening. They may decide to remand you into local authority accommodation. This means that Social Services and ourselves will decide where you should live.

You may be placed with a remand foster carer and you would be expected to live in their house until your court case has finished.

Custody

If the offence you commit is very serious, the court may remand you into custody. This means that you will have to go to a secure unit or young offender institute.

If this happens, we will come and visit you and keep in contact with your parents/carers.

If you are sentenced to a Detention and Training Order, you will also be sent to one of these places. We will continue to work with you while you are inside and when you come out.

Advice and information

We can offer advice and information to young people and their parents/carers about anything to do with being in trouble with the law. We can also give you information about other services in Haringey.

If you have a complaint about our service or the treatment you receive during your contact with us, you should talk first to the officer working with you. If you are unable to do this or do not feel happy with the response you should ask to speak to a manager.
