A levels - strong set of results for Haringey

Monday 18 August 2008

Haringey students have again recorded a high rate of success for A levels.

Provisional figures released today show that the average pass rate for the borough for 2008 was 97% compared to 97.1% last year. The figure compares to a national average of 97.2%.

Cllr Liz Santry, cabinet member for children and young people, said:

This is good set of results for our schools.

There has been a steady and welcome rise in A-level results in recent years and we now compare favourably with the national average.

As ever, the results are testament to many hours of hard work by students and staff alike and I congratulate them for reaping the benefits of that commitment.

These figures are provisional and may be subject to alteration, but it is expected that the final figures - usually published in the winter - will record a similar level of achievement to last year's results.

Highgate Wood:

Two students have gained places at Cambridge University, having achieved top A grades in their A levels.

This year sees the highest number of A and B grades at both A level and AS level, with over 87% of students beating their target grades.

A record number of students have gained university places, including Cambridge, Liverpool, Leeds, Kings College and Edinburgh.

Head of the sixth form Nick Charlesworth said:

The record number of students taking A levels at Highgate Wood has resulted in students from the school being increasingly successful in university applications. All staff at Highgate Wood are immensely proud of the achievements of the students who are a credit to the school, to teachers and to themselves.

Hornsey School for Girls:

Headteacher Carol Jones said:

With the largest number of students ever entered for A levels, Hornsey has succeeded in maintaining its high standards in terms of results at A level. We entered more students than ever before and they have gained better results than ever, particularly in maths, English, history and film studies.

We are particularly proud of our head girl, Natasha Shotunde who gained three As at A level and is off to university to study law; Shilen Shah also gained three As; and the significant number of students who have achieved, or exceeded, their personal goals.

This is an exciting and rewarding day for all of our students and staff who have worked so hard and achieved so much.
