'I wanna hold your hand!'

Tuesday 12 August 2008

The biggest hand holding exercise ever witnessed in North London will take place in Wood Green High Street on 17 September.

As part of the London Week of Peace celebrations, Haringey residents, shoppers, police, council workers, community organisations and retailers, young and old, are invited to form a human hand-holding chain, linking Wood Green Underground Station with Turnpike Lane.

The message is "holding hands in unity" and will take place at 4.30pm on Wednesday 17 September following a showcase event in the town centre in the afternoon.

The aim is to link hands between Wood Green tube and Turnpike Lane tube in a show of unity, the police, council and community organisations are already involved, and the public is invited to come along and join them.

Cllr Nilgun Canver, Haringey Council cabinet member for enforcement and safer communities, said:

I hope everyone can come along and show their determination to make Haringey even safer. In many respects crime is on the run in Haringey but our communities are staying together, celebrating diversity in unison.

Working with police and communities I know we can help people feel confident about where they live and not give way to the fear that a few newspaper headlines can create. We cannot tackle crime alone, we need communities to work alongside us and the police and together we will make a big difference.

Borough Commander Dave Grant said:

In recent years Haringey has seen significant reductions in crime and that is due in no small part to the exceptional work that is going on between police, the council and the community. This event is an opportunity for everyone to show their unity in the fight against crime, and the desire to create an atmosphere in which businesses, residents and families can feel safe and thrive.

Haringey's Safer Communities Partnership is hosting the showcase event at The Mall, Shopping City in Wood Green on Wednesday 17 September 2008 between 12 noon and 6pm.

This will show all the work being done to make Haringey safer, involving the police, fire service, the Safer Communities Team, the Safer Neighbourhood Teams and community organisations.

The London Week of Peace is an annual week of high profile events, initiatives and action organised principally by communities and individuals but also engaging organisations, businesses and public agencies, to promote greater community cohesion, safety and peace across the capital. It will take place from the 13 - 21 September 2008.
